Frequently Asked Questions

What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a unique healing system that stimulates the body’s own life force or vitality to rid of illness and bring in total wellness. It treats a disease through the use of highly diluted and energized natural substances (remedies) specifically chosen to match the individual state of the person and stimulate an inner vitality to overcome a disease state.

Are there harmful side effects from taking a homeopathic remedy?

Since the remedies are highly diluted, they do not contain significant amounts of the original substance from which they are made. Therefore, they do not have the toxic effects associated with many conventional medications or other substances. They are, however, powerful energetic stimuli and must be used with discretion. Sometimes, as part of the curative process, a person will experience a temporary intensification of symptoms called aggravation

Is it ok for children, pregnant women, elderly people or animals to take homeopathic remedies?

Homeopathy is a wonderful, gentle healing modality appropriate for people of all ages and conditions. It also is extensively used to treat animals.

How long does it take for homeopathy to work?

The severity and history of the problems will usually determine the length of time needed for true cure to happen. For example, a chronic pathology such as lifelong asthma will take more time to heal than an acute case of diarrhea due to food poisoning. Generally speaking, a constitutional remedy will begin it’s action fairly quickly and then continue to have a positive effect over months and years. In acute cases the relief could be felt almost immediately.

What is the source of homeopathic remedies, how are they made and how do they work?

Homeopathic remedies are made from a wide variety of plant, animal and mineral substances. They are made through a process of serial dilutions, where the original substance is first‘diluted’ and is then ‘successed’, meaning that it is energized by shaking the dilution. This process is done repeatedly, sometimes hundreds or thousands of times, resulting in an extremely dilute and highly energetically potent remedy. By selecting a remedy that closely matches the individual characteristics of a person, a homeopath is able to stimulate a deep curative reaction.

What kind of conditions or diseases can be treated homeopathically?

By its very nature, homeopathic treatment is not specific to a particular illness, but is directed at the underlying state of the person suffering from that illness. By addressing this state, the appropriately chosen remedy effectively addresses the illness. Therefore a broad range of illnesses whether acute or chronic can be treated homeopathically.

How does a homeopath choose a particular remedy for a person?

Yes. Many people who seek out homeopathic care are already taking conventional medication with the goal of reducing or eliminating the medication. One should continue other medication under the supervision of the doctor who has prescribed them. It is imperative that the change in dosage if required is to be done judiciously and under the guidance of experienced physician who has prescribed the conventional medication.

What are the origins of homeopathy and where is it practiced today?

Homeopathy traces its origins to the late 18th century when it was founded by German physician Samuel Hahnemann. Homeopathy originates from the Greek word, hómoios which means “similar” + páthos meaning “suffering” or “disease”. It aims to treat with nature’s law of cure of “like with like”. For example, one of the remedies for allergic rhinitis is Allium cepa (source: Onions). This cures symptoms such as running nose with watering eyes which are similar to the effects one experiences while cutting onions.

Homeopathy is used widely in Europe, America, India and South Africa.

Can homeopathic remedies be taken along with conventional medications?

Is one required to make changes in diet to take homeopathic remedies?

Different homeopaths may advise differently on this issue. Diet is not strictly speaking an issue in homeopathy. There is an understanding that the right remedy will facilitate more appropriate food choices. When one is healthy, the body more naturally is able to extract the nutrients it needs to function optimally. Eating sensibly, that is consuming appropriate quantities of properly balanced natural ingredients, is always a good idea.

Since all Homoeopathic remedies are absorbed from the tongue and inner lining of the mouth it is advised to patients that they refrain from eating or drinking anything for at least 15 minutes before & after taking the remedy.

Also if one has eaten anything strong smelling such as garlic, onion etc., one should rinse their mouth. Excess of coffee, alcohol, tobacco are restricted ( as they are stimulants) especially in patients who are restless or anxious.

What happens during a homeopathic consultation?

Essentially the homeopath will listen deeply to you – listening to understand many different aspects of your personality and state of health. Facts of disease, descriptions of pains, emotional reactions , stress handling, physical sensations and family history are all relevant. It is important to express oneself honestly. The better your homeopath understands your nature, the easier it will be to find the best remedy for you. The first consultation usually takes 45 mins to 1 hour. It does not make any difference if there are several problems at once (e.g. headaches, gastric issues, asthma) because a totality is constructed to treat the patient with a remedy that addresses all. A follow up consultation is usually recommended in about 2 weeks depending on the nature of the complaint. This usually takes approximately 30 minutes and allows for progress evaluation and further plan of treatment. The frequency of consultations vary from person to person depending on individual needs.
